Klara the Cow Who Knows How to Bow is a fun little story about a cow who is different than other cows. She’s really only different in one way, and given the title, I think you know what I mean. Now, Klara is loved by so many that she ends up with a Prince as a suitor. Prince Swede offers to buy her from the farmer who owns Klara. In the end, the Prince realizes that no amount of money can buy this special little cow. All this to say your child will end up learning a great lesson about how being different is great and makes each and every one of us special.
Right off the top, this book is incredibly positive and fun. There’s nothing negative in the book at all, and there’s no antagonist. The closest thing to an antagonist is the prince, who tries to buy Klara and is told no. His reaction is kind and gentle. It would have been easy for our author, Kimberley Kleczka, to recreate every Disney story out there, but I personally think we have enough of those. Instead, our author sticks to her being positive, and I think the book is better for it.
The book is all about fun; there is nothing that isn’t fun. Every rhyme that the author employs is fun, the names are fun, Klara is fun, the illustrations are fun, and…even the font is fun! The amount of fun and cute things in this book just drives home the positive nature of the book even more.
One of the most important things about any book is how it reads. During the many book reviews we’ve completed, we’ve always spoken about rhyming and rhythm being crucial to how the book reads. It affects what your child retains and it affects how often you pull the book out to read, in my opinion. In the case of this book, the author employs rhyming really well. She makes sure that every page has a rhyme on it and that it adds to the story. She also ensures that the rhythm of the book makes it such that you could basically sing it to your child.
Our illustrator (Apoorva Dingar), has created vibrant illustrations throughout the book. There isn’t one picture in the book that’s boring, and she has also created engaging pictures through the faces of every single one of the characters. Klara herself is cute and you feel her personality through every illustration and more specifically, through every facial expression. You feel like she’s a true cow (she even has great calves…) and yet you end up in tune with her as a character. I think the illustrations have really helped all of that come together.
In the end, the book’s message was probably the most impactful thing. Basically, this book is stating that it’s OK to be different and that people should be accepting of our differences. I don’t think there’s a more in-tune message out there for our children than that. With everything that’s going on in the world, it’s nice to see an author attack this directly.
Now, onto some of the extras that come with this book. And trust me when I say this; there’s a lot. Klara comes with her very own song that you can view below:
On top of that cute little diddy is an app/game created to go along with this book! I shouldn’t have had fun with it because I’m supposed to be an adult, but it was kind of fun dressing Klara. Click here for that game.
There’s more too. There’s an audio book, and there are multiple language versions of the book. There is also an instrumental version of the sing-along song above that you can use to have as a sort of karaoke version for a classroom. Kimberly also has a pretty substantial website with other songs, books, and a great deal more at Koolamundo.com.
If you haven’t already run off to Amazon to buy Kimberley Kleczka’s latest book (and all those extras we mentioned), Klara The Cow Who Knows How To Bow, then go on and head there now!
