We Don’t Need No Stinkin’ Manners is a book written for children that is truly (also) focused on mom’s enjoyment. This book tells a story about a group of silly and rambunctious children who would like to live their lives ignoring the very idea of manners. Their hope is that they can ignore their parent’s request to learn and use manners. In the end, they can’t hold out and just like everyone else, they end up being polite and helpful members of society (gasp)!
Upon starting the book, you will immediately notice the rhythm the book is written in. I immediately felt as if I was reading a poem, and not a difficult to read poem either. The author, J. R. Miller has made this an incredibly easy read for the parent. As most of us already know, the rhythm the book employs also helps with the retention of information in our children. It helps your child take as much as is possible out of the book and that in turn makes your time reading this book highly effective.
As I read the book to my toddler, I found him more and more focused on the illustrations. I have to be honest…they’re just fun and silly and I totally get why he was focused on them. In my mind, the best thing about the book is the way the illustrations work with the story. I love how the style of the illustrations feels a little out of control. It’s almost as if our author put herself in the mind of a child and then just let the drawings run wild. As such, there’s no picture in the book that I don’t think adds to the story.
Having said all this, I think our author has produced a pretty witty book. The reading experience was especially interesting with my toddler, as we both found ourselves smiling. Now, I’m pretty sure he was smiling at the mere thought of ignoring manners and causing trouble. In turn, I was smiling at the way the book was written. I was smiling because it’s just fun and funny. The author describes the book as tongue-in-cheek, and I definitely had to keep my tongue there!
Really what I’m saying is this is an extremely fun book that appeals to both adults and children. I’m personally saying that the book works for the age range of 2-10 years of age, but I’m pretty sure older children would like the book as well. I also know personally that parents will enjoy reading this to their kids, as the kids go from laughing and imagining to realizing that someday…they will have their stinkin’ manners.
In the end, it’s pretty easy to recommend such a fun and silly book. Head on over to Jacqueline Miller’s website, where she’ll sell you a copy of her book for $16.99 USD (although now it’s on sale for $11.50 USD – Nov 2, 2016). Her website also has an incredible amount of resources, including a free e-course, a blog, and a number of other products for you to look at.
