Peter & The Green Monster is a short storybook for toddlers about a big (sort of) menacing Green Monster who appears to be after our little protagonist, Peter. Peter is of course scared of the Green Monster coming into his house and his room. As a result he hides as the monster tries to find him and we feel the fear in Peter as the chase gets closer and closer. The story then takes a fun little turn when the Green Monster fakes that he’s hurt himself and Peter takes pity on him; then he taps him on the shoulder and says “Tag! Peter, now you’re it!”
Samantha Jackson, our author, uses rhymes and rhythm to really drive this storybook. She makes sure that every two lines has a rhyme and that the book can be read more like a song or poem. As a result of this style, the book becomes an incredibly easy read (despite the fact there’s actually a lot of words here). Of course, the style also helps with the retention of the story and vocabulary, which we love here at Toddler Book Reviews!
The illustrations in the book really drive towards our little toddlers. I know that my little toddler loved the way the Green Monster looked, from his funny little chicken feed to his warm and cuddly fur coat. He liked the fact that his teeth were pointed up and he didn’t have any upper teeth. I found that each item on illustrated to be fun and simple. It gave both my son and I something to look at as we went through the pages.
I think that when we’re talking about toddlers, parents should be aware of things that impact their little minds. It’s not a negative, but if you have a little person with one of those imaginations that can run wild, then you may want to prepare them for the book before you read it. The reason for that is that this book will likely generate just a little fear in a young mind. It’s the kind of fear that’s generally a good kind, and it’s important to note that there is nothing bad that actually happens in the book. It’s just a fun build up that’ll grab your child’s attention and scare them a little. However, at the end of the book when you both realize that it’s all a big game of tag, you can both have a good laugh.
Samantha Jackson and her Editor Brock Snyder have put together a cute little book that is fun and builds a little into a great surprise ending. It’s a simple book that can be read in just a few minutes and all of the illustrations are cute and enjoyable. It’s also incredibly reasonably priced, with the Kindle version being just $3.01 USD. Here’s where you can go to purchase Peter & The Green Monster on Amazon!
