Rescued by Love: A Story About Dog Adoption is a story created by 7 year old Linsday Jouet about her two dogs. At first, Lindsay and her family have Chili. He becomes bored when he’s left at home alone, and so the family adopts a second dog named Chex. Chex comes from a shelter and as such, this story has a moral basis that’s great for kids.
Forget the moral basis for a second. Forget the fact that Lindsay is only 7. Forget the fact that Lindsay is trying to deliver a positive message about adopting dogs.
The most impressive thing about this book isn’t any of those things. It’s the fact that Lindsay is also donating 50% of the proceeds to charities that benefit animal welfare. That should simply blow your mind because I can’t say that I know another 7 year old with that kind of philanthropic attitude to the world. In fact, most 7 year old children I know are playing Call of Duty right now.
Onto the book for a second here. Obviously there’s a great message here that Lindsay is giving your toddlers. She’s telling us how great it was that her family adopted Chex instead of going another route in finding their second dog. She’s highlighting how adopting a dog from a shelter should be at the top of mind when choosing a dog. Your little one is going to pick up on this as mine did. He immediately asked me what a shelter was. You can imagine what that conversation was like and how much he learned.
The illustrations aren’t what I would call typical. They’re actually photographs taken by Catherine Jouet. That doesn’t mean the book is a simple dog picture book. Instead, Catherine has taken the pictures and highly stylized them. In the end, the dogs and people in the story look incredible. Again, my toddler loved the pictures and he loved pointing out how happy the “puppies” looked.
Rescued By Love: A Story About Dog Adoption is a definite buy. This is simply because our young author, Lindsay Jouet, has her head in the right place. Not only that, but she’s produced something that many young toddlers will identify and love immediately. Couple that with the cute pictures of a couple of dogs, and you have something you’ll be reading with your little ones for a while.
Thanks for reading…with your toddlers,
