Zoya, The Cat’s Baker is a cute storybook for toddlers that explores the daily life of a little girl named Zoya and her cat friend Tabby. The two of them are inseparable and spend much of their days together. Zoya herself is a great friend and caretaker for Tabby, as she likes to (as you might imagine from the title) bake for cats! What your little one will witness is just how well Zoya takes care of Tabby as they develop a fantastic relationship.
Our author, Shubhra Sharma, has crafted this book in a few different ways. I think that’s what makes the book so special, and it’s what’s drawn me to the book. First off, the book has an almost poem like appearance. Each sentence develops a piece of the story or a character in the story, but each one is separated (basically, it’s a double line spacing for you MS Word folks) and this gives the story a poem-like appearance. What’s more, I noticed that most of the sentences carry with them a bit of a cadence and that allows you to read with a bit of a pace. If you’ve read a few of our reviews here, you know how important that is to your toddler absorbing information.
Another thing that Shubhra’s done that isn’t typical is that she’s included a coloring book along with the story. She’s essentially included the entire book’s illustrations at the back of the book in a black and white format. She’s allowing your little one to color the illustrations and to put their own take on the book. I think this is a great addition to a fun little story, and it gives the book an opportunity to really connect with your child. I know I’ll love looking back at the coloring my toddler has done in the book.
Speaking of the illustrations, I love what’s been done here by our illustrator, Jewelle Villarisco. The reason? As I look through them, I am transported back to my childhood and watching Saturday morning cartoons. I really get an Astro Boy feeling as I flip through the pages and I love that I am looking at a brand new book that’s taken this style on as its own. On top of that, the soft colors and soft features throughout the book do a great job of fitting in with the book’s story and characters. The little cats are a great example of this, as their features are nothing short of cute, while maintaining a very soft look.
Now then, if you’ve read this far then it’s likely you’re at least interested in a book like this. I can easily recommend the book for parents of toddlers, as everything is tailored exactly to that young age. Also, the price for a paperback copy is only $9.99 USD, while a Kindle copy is only $3.99 USD. For a cute story like this that includes a coloring book, those are some great prices. Thanks for reading…with your toddlers,
